Does NIB Recognise Waiting Periods When You Switch?

Switching insurers does not necessarily mean starting every waiting period again, but equivalence of cover matters.

NIB’s published position

NIB states that it recognises waiting periods already served on equivalent cover when a member switches from another health fund.

Equivalent cover is important

Recognition does not mean every benefit automatically transfers. A new product may have different benefits, limits, exclusions or waiting periods. Confirm how your previous cover maps to the NIB product you are considering.

Avoid a break in cover

Coordinate the end date of the old policy and start date of the new policy. This is especially important where continuous health cover is relevant to your visa.

Keep evidence of previous membership

Keep your previous policy details and any transfer or clearance evidence requested. This helps NIB assess waiting periods already served.
