Can You Suspend NIB OSHC or OVHC While Overseas?
NIB allows eligible international members to put cover on hold in certain overseas-travel circumstances, but OSHC and OVHC have different rules.
NIB OVHC suspension
NIB says overseas workers may be able to suspend OVHC when travelling outside Australia for more than four weeks and less than 24 months, after being with NIB for at least one month. NIB instructs members to contact it before leaving.
NIB OSHC suspension
For overseas students, NIB says suspension may be available for travel outside Australia for at least three months and up to two years. Its current help guidance says students apply after returning to Australia and the policy resumes from the return date.
What happens to waiting periods?
NIB says waiting periods do not reset or expire during suspension. If a waiting period was incomplete when cover was suspended, the remaining period continues after cover resumes.
Visa compliance still matters
A suspension is an insurance administration option, not immigration advice. Before suspending cover, make sure doing so is consistent with the health-insurance conditions applying to your visa and circumstances.
