Can NIB OVHC be used for a 485 visa?

nib currently lists subclass 485 among the visa subclasses for which its OVHC range is designed to meet Department of Home Affairs health-insurance requirements. The right product still depends on the applicant's circumstances, so the current quote journey and policy documents should be checked before purchase.

Why this page is different from a general comparison page

This guide focuses only on the NIB + 485 question: what changes after study, the timing of the switch, condition 8501 and NIB-specific cover information.

Moving from NIB OSHC to NIB OVHC

When you finish studying and move from a Student visa to a Temporary Graduate visa, OSHC is generally no longer the appropriate health-cover category for the new visa. nib tells graduating members that working-visa compliant graduate cover is available and its published guidance discusses moving from OSHC to OVHC.

485 visa and Condition 8501

Department of Home Affairs material lists the subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa among visas subject to condition 8501. Condition 8501 requires the visa holder to maintain adequate arrangements for health insurance while in Australia.

That does not mean every health insurance policy is automatically suitable. Home Affairs publishes minimum guidance for adequate health insurance, while the insurer determines which of its products are designed for the relevant visa.

What does NIB currently highlight for OVHC?

nib's current overseas working visitor information highlights a range of benefits across its visa cover products. What is actually included depends on the specific OVHC option you select.

H
Hospital cover

Access to benefits for hospital accommodation and included medical treatment.

A
Emergency ambulance

nib highlights unlimited emergency ambulance, subject to state schemes and policy terms.

GP
GP benefits on selected covers

Selected OVHC covers with GP benefits can include access to nib telehealth GPs.

App

Members can use nib's app for policy information, claims and other services.

What about waiting periods when switching?

nib states that it recognises waiting periods already served on an equivalent cover, subject to its rules. This is particularly important when you are moving from OSHC to OVHC and have already been insured for some time.

Current nib international member information lists hospital waiting periods including 12 months for pregnancy and birth-related services, 12 months for inpatient pre-existing conditions, and 2 months for inpatient psychiatric treatment, rehabilitation and inpatient palliative care. Your selected OVHC may exclude or restrict some services, so the product-specific documents still control.

Do not assume continuity automatically. If continuity of waiting periods matters to you, confirm with nib how your previous policy and new OVHC will be treated before cancelling or changing cover.
