NIB OVHC, Medicare & Reciprocal Health Care Agreements
Some temporary visitors may have limited Medicare access through a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement, but that does not necessarily replace private health cover or satisfy every visa condition.

RHCA countries
Australia has reciprocal health care agreements with a limited group of countries.
Limited Medicare
RHCA access is limited and does not cover every healthcare cost.
Check your visa
Your visa grant notice and Condition 8501 remain important even if Medicare access is available.
Does Medicare mean you do not need OVHC?
Not necessarily. NIB notes that reciprocal arrangements often do not include services such as ambulance, private hospital treatment or Extras. More importantly, if your visa carries a private health insurance requirement, check that requirement separately.
Working Holiday visas
For many subclass 417 and 462 holders health insurance is not compulsory, but individual visa conditions differ. Travellers from RHCA countries may still choose OVHC to reduce gaps in Medicare access.
Before cancelling private cover
Confirm your Medicare eligibility, your visa conditions and the services you would lose. Do not rely only on nationality or assume reciprocal Medicare is equivalent to comprehensive private cover.
