Dental

Do not assume routine dental is included in standard OSHC.

Optical

Glasses and routine optical are generally Extras-style services.

Physio

Out-of-hospital physiotherapy may require separate or product-specific benefits.

Why this causes confusion

OSHC is primarily designed to meet student visa health-cover requirements. It is not the same thing as Australian resident Extras insurance. NIB’s public OSHC page specifically lists Extras services among services not paid under its standard OSHC presentation.

Check the exact NIB product

NIB has had different OSHC products and arrangements over time. Product rules can contain additional benefits that differ from the standard public OSHC Core summary. Use the current product information and Fund Rules rather than assuming all NIB OSHC products are identical.

Before booking treatment

Ask whether the service has a Medicare item number, whether your exact NIB OSHC product pays a benefit, whether a waiting period applies and what your likely out-of-pocket cost will be.
